Ralph Nader’s Campaign Produces Another Bizarre Advertisement

Posted by Milo Taibi Categories: Editorials, Elections, Videos

Everyone knows why Ralph Nader continues to run for president every four years - he believes that the American people deserve better than two legitimate candidates for the Presidency. While his views are debatable, it’s indisputable that Nader running at the conclusion of each presidential term has a damaging effect on both the Democratic and Republican candidates. In 2000, Nader attempted to inch his way into the presidential race by calling for reform for both parties, as well as claiming that George W. Bush and Al Gore had identical political views.

“Our two parties are basically one corporate party wearing two heads and different makeup,” Nader said at a 2000 rally. “There is a difference between Tweedledum and Tweedledee, but not that much.”

The year 2008 has brought a new, and vastly more peculiar approach from the Nader camp. Several odd political advertisements have been released by his campaign’s youtube channel; the latest entitled, “The Obama Nuts.” Politico.com explained the video in a post on Sunday.

“The video, “The Obama Nuts,” debuted Sunday and chronicles an “Obama supporter,” at least according to the release, wearing a Nader T-shirt and in search of said nuts.

The video, which is heavy on use of the word “nuts,” says it is using the definition provided in Slate’s Encyclopedia Baracktannica: “a representation of Barack Obama’s courage and willingness to act.”

The video concocts a fake CNN broadcast and uses Obama’s actual voice from a speech in which he says, “We need them. We need them badly. Not just my campaign, but the American people need their service and their vision and their wisdom.”

To be honest, I have no idea what Nader is trying to achieve with this advertisement. Having watched it, I feel considerably more confused about Nader’s views on the upcoming election. It is perhaps a cheap attempt at mainstream publicity, but this isn’t the first unusual advertisement from Nader’s campaign. An earlier ad featured Nader contemplating the idea of dressing up in a Panda Bear outfit for publicity:

And another drove the point that Obama and McCain were using interchangeable lines when speaking - a particularly puzzling accusation, considering the vast political differences between the two candidates:

I’m sure there would be some comedic relief as a result of this odd campaign tactic, but this is a man who will be receiving votes from both Democrat and Republican voters. As Bill Maher said about Nader, “sometimes you can be right, and not be correct.” Nader may not be completely wrong about his stances on vital issues, but he is doing a disservice to the country by continuously running for president when he hasn’t a shot to win. Let’s hope that 2008 is the last year we see Ralph Nader’s name come up around election season.

Ralph Nader runs, and continues to run for, I believe, two reasons. One is to present the people with an example of the ideals and ethics worth fighting for, and two, he believes in honesty. The system of politics is sooo screwed up with corporate money that our elections are, (and have been),  for sale to the highest bidder. Is anyone else left with the impression that voices of dissent are being sacrificed ? I’m supporting Ralph Nader to keep the constitutional liberties granted by that document, and not submit to the corpocracy that is trying to control the destiny of this country. I can only hope that our divided, distracted, diverted populace does something other than electing one of the corporate shills running, we’ve had 200 years to have a representative government, and still have a corporate power structure that has run us into the ditch YET AGAIN! Lets do something different this time,
Vote Sanity, Vote Nader.

How far from reality must one be to make a claim (or even insinuate it) that we should be forced into choosing from two, pre-selected candidates (when they are selected by the ruling elite).

You say that Nader is running against two legitimate candidates. Who?

Name them.

The problem with halfwits who spout ######## like this, is that they are a pawn of the elect. You think and believe what they want you to believe. NOT what the Constitution or logic says.

You don’t have a clue what this country is about or how it was founded if you are going to make such idiotic comments.

But it is your blog and fools will do what fools do.

When the major media outlets censor a candidate, he needs to get voters’ attention anyway he can, especially when he advocates precisely what the majority of Americans want, but the major party candidates refuse to deliver- prosecution of Wall Street crooks, single payer universal health care for all, an end to the draining wars, etc. It’s a crime that censorship abounds and the idea he takes votes from the twomajor parties is ridiculous. He earns votes the old fashioned way.

in this case, nader is right and correct. women’s right to vote, ending slavery, labor movements all came from 3rd party candidates and their supporters who forced the major parties to take on their issues because they had a breaking point. What do they have to do to lose YOUR vote?

We need to start paying more attention to Ralph Nader. He’s been warning us about the things that caused this economic crisis for decades and that’s documented quite well. He also has solutions for the crisis now, but instead of listening to Nader we keep putting the arsonists in charge of the fire station.

When we’re stuck in wars that have killed over 1.5 million innocent people, the economy is in shambles, and the Constitution is being gutted—well, I take that as a sign that it’s way past time we need to draw a line and stop supporting either of the parties that got us into such a mess!

I agree with you completely.  I think it’s ridiculous to see someone pull attention away from the real candidates ESPECIALLY someone like Ralph Nader.  I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be more than 2 candidates, but let’s be honest… why make an ####### out of yourself every four years?  Wouldn’t it eventually get boring?

Who is Ralph Nader and how dare he run for President. After all Obama was a community organizer, lol.

What has Nader ever done?

Attorney, author, and consumer advocate Ralph Nader has been named by Time Magazine one of the “100 Most Influential Americans in the 20th Century.” For more than four decades he has exposed problems and organized millions of citizens into more than 100 public interest groups advocating solutions. He led the movement to establish the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and was instrumental in enacting the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and countless other pieces of important consumer legislation. Because of Ralph Nader we drive safer cars, eat healthier food, breathe better air, drink cleaner water, and work in safer environments. Nader graduated from Princeton University and received an LL.B from Harvard Law School.

Wow… congrats.  Now go Wikipedia Barack Obama and spend the next 10 days writing out his story too…

“particularly puzzling accusation, considering the vast political differences between the two candidates”

When 2 people are saying the exact same thing. Why do you think that they’re “vast differences” between them? Your logic is what puzzles me…

I voted for Ralph Nader in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008.

Instead of hoping that our democracy crumbles, as the author of this article hopes for, lets hope that in 2012 our democracy is stronger than it is today.  Lets hope for more voices, and more choices.  Lets hope that there can be more than just the two corporate candidates “debating” the issues in the presidential debates.

Let us hope that it is still a government of the people, by the people, and for the people; not a government of the Exxons, by the Halliburtons, and for the General Electrics.
